Hay feverdoes not correctly refer to the term as hay doesn’t usually cause allergy and all the more fever. It was called that way due to the early descriptions of the allergy-affected people who were gathering the harvest on the hay fields. The correct term for this aliment is allergic rhinitis. Rhino stands for “nose” and rhinitis means "irritation of the nose". Hay fevercan be divided into two types: seasonal allergic rhinitis which happens during a special time of the year and perennial allergic rhinitis which occurs all the year round. The term allergic rhinitis is often used together with the term “rhinosinusitis” which stands for the inflammation of the lining tissues of the sinuses as well as the nasal lining.

Hay feversymptoms usually include nasal stuffiness, sneezing, eye itching, tears and cough. Sometimes it also causes the loss of olfaction and the sense of taste. In severe condition nose can bleed. The inflammation of the whites of the eyes, the eye itching and tears are called "allergic conjunctivitis".

Allergic rhinitis can result into more serious diseases such as asthma and sinusitis. For many people allergy is the reason that stops them from taking an active part in social and physical activities. For instance, it is rather difficult to concentrate while you are suffering from allergic rhinitis.
